Family Business

Society/Everyday life, Germany 2016

88-year-old Anne rules her life in Bochum from her sofa. Her husband died recently. He had skillfully covered up in everyday life what is now becoming frighteningly clear to her daughters: Anne is suffering from dementia. She can no longer live alone. Jowita's family has been living in the building site of their house in Lubin, Poland, for years. The kitchen is missing, the bedrooms are still under construction. The 13-year-old daughter is eagerly waiting for her own room. There is a lack of money. Jowita urgently needs work. By moving in with Anne as a caregiver, Jowita takes on the task that Anne's working daughters cannot do: To be there for their mother around the clock. But the old lady increasingly loses touch with reality. She can't fit Jowita into her life. The two women don't get on well. They don't particularly like each other either. The days become tough and long for Jowita, who now finds herself far away from her own family in the routines of an old woman. FAMILY BUSINESS portrays the two families who organize themselves around Anne's well-being. They exchange time for wages, turning family into a job. Without simple attributions, the film follows this economic trail deep into the everyday lives of these families. Where is there profit? What is the loss? A balance sheet that more and more of us will have to draw sooner or later.
