Ian Rankin - My Edinburgh

Art/Country & People, Germany 2013

This documentary takes audiences on a captivating tour of Edinburgh, showcasing the intertwined lives of Sir Ian Rankin, a failed rock musician turned celebrated writer, and John Rebus, the iconic character from Rankin's detective novels. "I began writing crime fiction to write about Edinburgh," says the Scottish writer Sir Ian Rankin, whose Inspector John Rebus novels have sold over 60 million copies, making him one of the most successful crime writers of his time. "I wanted to write about the fact, that it is a Jekyll-and-Hyde city. The city that the visitor comes to, and they see the castle, they see the monuments... They see the tradition and the culture. They don't see what's just below the surface. So I started to write crime fiction to write about the real Edinburgh. Edinburgh remains the main character in my books."
