Homöopathie unwiderlegt?

Knowledge, Germany 2022

Are doctors who practice homeopaths all wrong? Are they deceiving their patients, as many critics allege? Or have homeopathy practitioners simply never been listened to properly? In "Homeopathy Unrefuted?" 19 homeopathy practitioners, lobbyists and other prominent supporters of the method undertake it to explain their healing method to the filmmaker. The result is a revelation of a multitude of fundamental contradictions. Filmmaker Erik Lemke confronted all of his interviewees with identical questions - with the aim to understand what exactly it is that produces the healing effect of homeopathic methods. The history of homeopathy also plays a role. Karl-Heinz Gebhardt, former chairman of the German Hufeland Society and a veteran homeopathy supporter, explains how a concerted lobbying campaign resulted in the inclusion of homeopathic remedies when West Germany's pharmaceutical legislation was reformed in 1976. Lemke calls the interview technique in his film a Socratic conversation: an open questioning without preconceived opinion: "At first glance, the film is one-sided because only supporters of the method get to speak," Lemke explains in an interview with the German media outlet D-Radio Kultur. "But all protagonists agreed that I addressed the difficult issues as well. In my film, homeopaths themselves reveal issues that are usually pointed out by critics of homeopathy and scientists. If you really map the [homeopathic - ed.] method as it is, you get no clear answers, and there is no clearly defined concept either. That's the nature of homeopathy. There are many contradictions. Each practicioner has his or her own method, and they often contradict each other so much that homoeopaths practically work in completely contradictory ways. But they always succeed to help, patients are always enthusiastic. This sparked my interest, so I wanted to find out what this is all about.
