Island – Die wertvollsten Daunen der Welt

Vida cotidiana/País & Gente, Germany 2022

Loðmundarfjörður in Iceland: Except in the few summer months, this remote and uninhabited fjord is accessible only by boat. This is where farmer Ólafur Aðalsteinsson, his wife and a couple of friends are drawn. Every year. It is the time when the eider ducks come to the farm to breed. Protected by humans, they lay their eggs here and leave their soft down to the farmers in return. These fine feathers have special properties that are also appreciated by humans, such as special heat retention. Pillows and blankets filled with this down are among the most valuable in the world and usually cost several thousand euros. However, only a few of the 380 or so farmers on Iceland can make such a profitable living from the eider feathers.
